Day two: workshop – colorful layers.
The first day of this workshop series is all about COLORFUL LAYERS. Be inspired by the magical images, vivid colors and patterns of Indonesia art, festivals and culture. Learn painting techniques; create fabulous hand painted papers and fabrics. Explore painting, dyeing and printmaking techniques including color scraping, monoprints, eyedropper doodles, gesso textures, dyed cloth stamping, stenciling and glazing. Create textured printing plates made from cardboard, cardstock, and fun foam. Make prints from acrylic, hand cut stencils, sequins and found materials.
Day three: workshop – the street market
jewels of the east...this unique, handmade book is a collection of treasured personal images, papers and findings collected from wanderings and travels through the open-air street markets in Southeast Asia. You will use the paintings created in the first workshop to create signatures that are made up of gritty “fusion-dyed” collage covers filled with deconstructed found papers collected in the first few days of travel. The journal is bound with woven fibers and finished off with a beaded macramé binding.
Day four: excursion* - textile tour - Learn how batik cloths are made, fabric factory tour, markets for beads/fabric/embellishments
Day five: workshop – .dancers crown.
Taking inspiration from the Balinese dancers costume you will create an artist book with embellished distressed metal and jewels with painted fabric. Throughout the week you will collect pieces/ephemera/fabrics to incorporate into your artwork along with your painted pieces from Day two. I will lead you through creative exercises throughout the week to guide you to design your very own “dancers crown.” (will provide sample picture)
Day six: excursion* - outdoor excursion - Nyepi
The biggest holy day of the year, Nyepi, takes place on the 8th of march. This is a great time in Bali, as there are lots of celebrations and ceremonies we could be involved in. The biggest thing is the making of the Ago-ago's which are giant paper mache "monsters. The villagers buid the incredible objects and then parade them thru the towns at night and finish by burning them to dissipate the evil spirits. We will be taking an excursion to experience Nyepi.
Day seven: excursion*/ final night party - TBD
