Taking inspiration from my books Collage Unleashed, Doodles Unleashed and my new book Printmaking Unleashed along with my artful journey as a mixed media artist, I have created fun and inspirational mixed media workshops that bring out the playful artist and child-like spirit in everyone. The approach to making art in my workshops is fun and spirited. Your creative spirit will be guided through inspirational idea jumpstarts and aRt! exercises! Unleash your inner artist and join Traci Bautista for a creative weekend at her studio as she shares inventive ideas for making marks with handmade tools, nontraditional materials and simple DIY printmaking techniques. Taking inspiration from her latest book, Printmaking Unleashed, dive into a journey of expressive mark-making.
Explore how everyday objects can create beautiful, expressive marks. Dive into unconventional techniques to create one-of-a-kind monoprints, relief prints and patterns. Experiment with creative ways to adorn the surface and create colorful, textured layers on your mixed media artwork!
The mark of a brushstroke that dances across the page, paint sprayed through deconstructed needlepoint canvas, a stick wrapped with yarn, hot glue stencils, textured printing plates and stamps made from wax and clay, the bottom of a water bottle, zip ties, toothpicks, freezer bags and craft foam inscribed with a skewer. What do all these have in common? Each one makes a unique mark, an impression on the canvas that helps express a window into our creative soul.
During this 2-day workshop you'll be inspired, create a bunch of NEW printmaking tools and leave with a HUGE stack of papers and fabrics to use in your mixed media projects. You'll receive a mixed media paper kit and mark-making tool kit as part of the workshop. lunch, pastries & snacks will be provided. ALL MIXED MEDIA supplies included with workshop.

Art.journal.PLAY: Creative Explorations in Mixed Media, Printmaking and Art Journaling
Pacific NorthWest Art School, Whigbey Island, WA
June 23-26, 2016 (9am-4pm)
Experiment with mixed media, painting, printmaking and fabric collage techniques to create a one-of-a-kind art journal. We will start with printing fabric and paper with handmade and found tools. Then build a journal with a “textured” collage cover that is wrapped with embellished fibers and yarns. You will leave feeling inspired to fill your new handmade book with techniques I share about building colorful mixed media layers.
day one – printmaking unleashed – handmade tools + nature tools + patterns
We’ll start the class building and creating numerous handmade printing tools, including handmade stamps, hot glue stencils and paper masks. Then we’ll take a nature walk to take photos and collect dried grasses, leaves and sticks to create handmade paintbrushes. You’ll work with a huge amount of materials and mixed media supplies to experiment with mark-making and patterns.
day two – plexi printmaking + mixed media layers
Experiment with plexiglas monoprints working with handmade stamps and stencils to build layers on fabric and paper. Explore simple printmaking techniques without a press to create acrylic skins and colorful mixed media fabrics and papers.
day three – art journal construction: doodles + collage
Throughout the workshop we’ll explore techniques from my all my books and I’ll showcase how to use them on page for your journal pages. I’ll share demonstrations in mark-making, lettering and talk about how to digitally leverage your artwork. We’ll continue to work on paintings from the previous day and explore mixed media techniques including collage, doodling and begin book construction. During day three we’ll start to create textured “canvas” journal covers from layers of fabrics and papers.
day four – art journal construction: binding + creative jumpstarts
During the final day of the workshop, we’ll continue to build the journals creating the fiber embellished binding. Throughout the day we’ll explore creative prompts and art journaling exercises. I’ll also share tips on photography using the iPhone/iPad, working with various apps to create digital images and ideas on how to incorporate your explorations into your art journal.
